Postcard 1907 Winter Niagara Falls NY Embossed Oval Icicles Waterfall Scenic

Niagara Falls, New York, USA1905Pre-linenExcellent

Icicles drape like crystal curtains around a thundering curtain of water as a lone dark-coated figure stands dwarfed at the base of a frozen Niagara Falls — one of the golden age of postcard collecting's most beloved winter subjects, captured here in a richly tinted oval vignette framed by an embossed pink border with gilt beading and ornate corner flourishes. The card belongs to the "Undivided-to-Divided Back" transitional Embossed era, consistent with the stamp box on the reverse listing domestic postage at 1 cent and foreign at 2 cents — a rate structure in force 1898–1907 — and the notation that Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Hawaii, Philippines, and Porto Rico all qualify for the domestic rate, firmly placing this in the territorial/insular period of U.S. postal history. The winter ice bridge at Niagara was a spectacle that drew thousands of tourists annually until the bridge collapsed catastrophically in 1912, making pre-1912 winter Niagara imagery especially evocative for collectors. The card is unused and pristine, retaining excellent embossed relief and vivid chromolithographic color.
