Antique & Vintage Postcards

Rising like a gothic island amid Manhattan's canyon of early skyscrapers, Trinity Church's dark sandstone spire pierces the sky in this vivid linen-era aerial view — the surrounding white towers of Lower Broadway make it look almost swallowed whole, yet it endures, just as it has since 1846. Founded in 1696 at the head of Wall Street, this Episcopal parish was once the wealthiest landowner in New York, its $10-million real-estate portfolio funding eight chapels, a hospital, schools, and missionary work in the city's poorest neighborhoods. The churchyard, visible in lush green at lower right, holds the graves of some of America's most storied figures. The colorful lithographic printing is crisp, the card unused, capturing a moment when finance and faith stood side by side in the heart of the world's most ambitious city.
