Postcard 1930s Diego Rivera Fresco Zapata Palacio Cortes Cuernavaca Mexico

Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico1945LinenFair-Good

A white-clad campesino stands resolute beside a powerful white horse, machete at his hip and lance at his back, while a crowd of revolution-era faces press in from the shadows behind — Diego Rivera's monumental vision of Emiliano Zapata as the embodiment of Mexico's agrarian struggle leaps from the wall of the Palacio de Cortés in Cuernavaca with an almost electric intensity. This mid-century colour postcard reproduces a section of Rivera's famous 1930 fresco cycle commissioned by U.S. Ambassador Dwight Morrow, one of the most politically charged murals in Mexican history. The Zapata figure — white against dark, sickle curved below his boot — is among Rivera's most iconic images and has been reproduced on everything from textbooks to gallery posters. Published by the Fischgrund Publishing Co. of Mexico City, this is an early colour offset reproduction that captures the mural's bold flat planes and earthy palette with surprising fidelity. A must-have for collectors of Mexican art, muralism, and revolutionary history.
