Postcard 1916 Bielefeld Germany Rathaus und Theater Real Photo Era WWI

Bielefeld, Germany1916Pre-linenGood

Dated in a confident hand "7 Nov. 1916" — the third year of the Great War — this evocative real-photo-era view of Bielefeld's grand Rathaus and Theater square captures a city going about its daily life while the Western Front raged hundreds of miles away: a lamplit plaza, a few civilians in dark coats, and the ornate stepped-gable façade of the Neues Rathaus (completed 1904) standing proud beside the Stadttheater's sweeping arched entrance. Published by the Schlesische Lichtdruck- u. graph. Kunstanstalt of Breslau, a significant German commercial printer, the card bears a penciled postal code "4800" — the modern postcode for Bielefeld — added later by a collector. The reverse is otherwise unwritten, the message space blank, giving it the feeling of a souvenir kept rather than sent during difficult times.
