Plain, purposeful, and quietly elegant — the Office and Store building of the Hancock Shaker Village stands behind its split-rail fence in this reproduction postcard issued by Shaker Community, Inc. in 1976, the same year America celebrated its Bicentennial and renewed interest in Shaker craftsmanship reached a cultural peak. The black-and-white halftone image faithfully reproduces an earlier photograph of the two-story clapboard complex at Pittsfield, Massachusetts — a community founded in the 1780s that endured until 1960, leaving behind one of the most intact Shaker settlements in the United States, now preserved as Hancock Shaker Village museum. The Victorian-era office wing with its bracketed porch and decorative gable is joined seamlessly to the older store section, the whole ensemble framed by mature conifers and a characteristic Shaker fence. The card is unused and in excellent condition.
