Real photo postcard of Schloss Vornbach am Inn, Bavaria — the former Benedictine abbey church and its attached monastic buildings filling a gentle rise above open meadows and forest, framed by leafy branches in the foreground in a classic pastoral composition. Vornbach Abbey was founded in 1094 and functioned as a Benedictine monastery for more than seven centuries before Bavaria's secularization in 1803 dissolved it; the buildings passed through private hands and by the time this card was posted in May 1933 had become a private estate. The sender — writing to a senior district medical officer in Vienna's 2nd district — dated the card Wednesday, May 24, 1933: four months after Hitler came to power in neighboring Germany, though the correspondent's message from this quiet corner of Bavaria makes no mention of it.
