Chrome postcard of the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, Maui — the two-story plantation-era building with its red roof and wraparound verandas that stood on the harbor front for over a century, palm trees bending overhead and a lineup of mid-1960s American cars at the curb. The Pioneer Inn opened in 1901 and became one of the most recognizable buildings in Hawaii, a fixture of Lahaina's waterfront through the whaling era, the plantation era, and the tourism boom alike. In August 2023 the Lahaina wildfire — the deadliest American disaster in over a century — swept through the town and destroyed the Pioneer Inn along with most of historic Front Street. This card is now a document of something that no longer exists.
