Split Spalato Temple Jupiter Diocletian Palace Croatia Postcard c1900

Split (Spalato), Dalmatia, Croatia1900Pre-linenGood

Early Dalmatian postcard reproducing an 1848 engraving of the Temple of Jupiter inside Diocletian's Palace at Split — the massive Roman masonry of the temple cella, a medieval Romanesque bell tower rising improbably from one corner, a lone figure in the courtyard giving scale to the ancient stones. The Temple of Jupiter was built around 300 AD as part of Emperor Diocletian's retirement palace complex, one of the best-preserved Roman buildings in the world; in the early medieval period it was converted into a baptistery, and the bell tower was added in the 12th century. The back of this card is printed in three languages — German, Croatian, and Italian — the administrative reality of Habsburg Dalmatia, where Split was known as Spalato and the population navigated multiple languages and cultures under Austrian rule. The undivided back places this card at the very dawn of the picture postcard era, c.1900.
