In May 1944 — with Allied forces weeks away from D-Day — a young serviceman named Bill arrived at an induction or training site in Indianapolis and dashed off this no-frills postcard of the towering Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument at the heart of downtown to the Gorman family back in Lakewood, Ohio, writing with disarming candor that "everything is routine and that's about as interesting as a blank wall — no uniform yet, food not so bad, prefer Cleveland" and signing off with a cheerful "Good luck, Bill"; the card was furnished free to service men by the Indiana Bell Telephone Company and bears a 1¢ George Washington green stamp, postmarked Indianapolis May 8, 1944.
