Postcard 1946 Hotel Russell-Lamson Waterloo Iowa Linen Hilton

Waterloo, Iowa, USA1946LinenFair-Good

A vivid linen-era snapshot of Waterloo, Iowa's grandest address — the ten-story brick Hotel Russell-Lamson dominates the corner with its rooftop sign boldly proclaiming its Hilton affiliation, striped awnings sheltering ground-floor shops, and a parade of 1940s automobiles lining the curb below. Built in 1914 and later absorbed into the Hilton chain, the Russell-Lamson was the social hub of Black Hawk County for decades. On the back, a warm 1946 note from Betty to her friend speaks of sickness in the family, a luncheon she just couldn't face, and children named Johnny and Lee — intimate domestic life preserved on a penny postcard mailed in the final summer of the war era, addressed to a Mrs. Brown on Military Road in Columbus, Mississippi.
