Postcard Hancock-Clarke House Lexington MA 1910s Valentine-Souvenir Chrome

Lexington, Massachusetts, USA1910Pre-linenGood

Standing sentinel on a shaded New England street, the Hancock-Clarke House in Lexington, Massachusetts glows in the hand-tinted warmth of an early twentieth-century souvenir card — this is the very house where Samuel Adams and John Hancock slept on the night of April 18, 1775, awakened by Paul Revere's famous midnight ride to warn that British troops were marching. The two-story clapboard colonial, its white-mullioned windows and modest entry preserved by the Lexington Historical Society, is framed here by a towering oak and blooming lilac shrubs, with a neighboring gambrel-roofed structure visible at right. Published by the Valentine-Souvenir Co. of New York (card no. 2/2992), this undivided-back-era style card — with its "Address Only" reverse and "Famous Superior Quality Throughout the World" medallion — dates to the early divided-back transitional period, circa 1907–1915. A penciled dealer notation "Sher / 1cs / 221" appears in the stamp box. The house remains a museum today, one of the most historically charged addresses in American Revolutionary history.
