Antique & Vintage Postcards

Cattle wade in dappled shade along the green bank of the Mississippi River near Moline, Illinois, in this warmly tinted early color lithograph — a pastoral idyll that doubles as a window into working-class American mobility in the industrial Midwest. The sender, Lula, dashed off a breezy note to her friend Marie in Cleveland: she'd been working at the John Deere Plow Company in Moline for five weeks, had "a brand new Underwood" typewriter, and wasn't sure how long she'd stay — a snapshot of a young woman navigating the early 20th-century labor market. The card is postmarked Moline, Illinois, June 28, 1911, machine-canceled with the Rock Island Post Card Co. advertising slug. Addressed care of Miss Marie Carroll, Beckett, Ohio, with a forwarding address scratched in to 3749 E. 71st St., Cleveland — suggesting Marie herself was in transit.
