Postcard Linen Nelson Dream Village Musical Fountain Route 66 Lebanon MO 1940s

Lebanon, Missouri, USA1940LinenGood

A magnificent dome of cascading water catches the Ozark afternoon light at Nelson Dream Village, where the famous electrical and musical fountain — one of Route 66's most celebrated roadside spectacles — drew travelers off the highway in Lebanon, Missouri throughout the 1930s and 40s. Two women and a man lean against the stone basin's edge, dwarfed by the arching jets that rise fifteen feet overhead, while Tudor-style tourist cabins peek through the trees at right. This linen-era card, printed by Curt Teich in Chicago with their signature Photo-Colorit process, captures the golden age of American road travel when Nelson's — sitting at the junction of US Highway 66 and No. 5 — promised "cool nights in the Ozark Mountains," chicken dinners, free garage, and moderate prices to weary travelers chasing the American dream westward.
