Postcard 1929 New Bear Pits Zoo Forest Park St. Louis Missouri Linen

St. Louis, Missouri, USA1929Pre-linenGood

Sunbathers in cloche hats and dark coats stroll past immaculate flower borders to peer over the railing at hulking brown bears lounging against the dramatic rusticated stonework of Forest Park Zoo's celebrated New Bear Pits — a WPA-adjacent civic showpiece that drew enormous crowds in the late 1920s when St. Louis was riding a wave of municipal pride. The linen-like coloring gives the flowerbeds an almost fantastical intensity: scarlet, orange, and violet blooms frame the stone grottos against a warm peach sky. Published by the Beacon Series and postmarked St. Louis, February 3, 1929, the card carries the most economical of messages — "I got here O.K. — Bonnie" — addressed to Mrs. W. Stringer at 601-14th Street, Port Huron, Michigan, reassuring someone waiting at home.
