Postcard 1913 Roger Williams Park Gates Elmwood Ave Providence RI Colorized

Providence, Rhode Island, USA1913Pre-linenGood

A sun-drenched summer afternoon at the ornate iron gates of Roger Williams Park on Elmwood Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island — a solitary early automobile, likely a Model T-era runabout painted deep red, pauses between the grand stone pillars topped with globe lanterns, conjuring the exact moment when horse-drawn carriages were yielding the road to the motorcar. The hand-colored lithograph glows with warm amber and green tones, capturing the lush canopy of mature trees that still frames this beloved 430-acre Victorian park, donated to the city in 1871 by Betsey Williams. On the back, a cousin named May dashes off a breezy note to her cousin in Sodus Centre, New York: "Here I am on the go again with my nephew and niece. This is a nice little city and we are enjoying it very much." Published by Max Latt of Providence, the card carries a crisp September 1913 Providence postmark and a well-centered 1-cent Washington stamp.
