Postcard 1905 Derwentwater Friars Crag Lake District England Star Series

Derwentwater, Keswick, Cumbria, England1903Pre-linenFair-Good

Tall Scots pines crown a dramatic rocky headland thrusting into the dark, mirror-still waters of Derwentwater in England's Lake District — a scene that captivated John Ruskin and still lures walkers to Friars Crag today. This early-1900s colour-printed card from the "Star Series" by G.D. & D., London captures the crag's characteristic tangle of exposed roots and ancient granite, with a white-painted lakeside building visible across the water beneath the brooding green flank of Cat Bells. Printed in Bavaria in the chromolithograph style typical of the Edwardian golden age of postcards, the card was never posted and retains its full undivided-back layout specifying "Inland Only" use — a format mandated before the 1902 postal regulation change, helping date this example to approximately 1900–1905. The pencilled "50" in the top corner suggests it passed through a dealer's hands at some point, a quiet footnote to its century-long journey.
