Paris Sacre Coeur Basilica Montmartre France Postcard c1925

Paris, France1925Pre-linenGood

Sacré-Cœur from the foot of Montmartre — the whole processional approach laid out in one frame: the semicircular belvedere crowded with visitors, the terraced gardens climbing the hill, the broad staircase, and the white Romano-Byzantine basilica at the summit. The caption credits architects Abadie and Magne, who oversaw construction from 1875 to consecration in 1919 — a building conceived as an act of national atonement after the Franco-Prussian War and the trauma of the Commune. By the 1920s it had become one of the most visited monuments in France, and cards like this sold by the thousands to tourists who had just made the climb. The theatrical scale of the composition — the entire hill as a stage set — is what makes this view the definitive image of the basilica.
