A sweeping stone breakwater curves dramatically into the grey North Sea, its famous lighthouse standing sentinel at the far tip — this is Roker Pier, Sunderland, photographed shortly after its grand opening in 1903 and here rendered in a delicate hand-coloured halftone that tints the sky a warm amber and the sea a luminous blue-green. Built between 1885 and 1903 at enormous cost, Roker Pier was celebrated as an engineering marvel of the Edwardian era; the access stairways visible mid-card allowed workers and lighthouse keepers to descend to the lower tidal ledge.
