Equal parts fairground charm and Yorkshire folk legend, this remarkable novelty "Message Card" features an embossed chromolithographic portrait of Mother Shipton — the famous prophetess of Knaresborough, here rendered in her stock guise as a stout, hook-nosed wise-woman in red cloak, yellow bonnet, and blue skirt, clutching a besom broom and wicker basket — accompanied by the promotional verse "Mother Shipton was a wise woman and knew a good place. Come and try Knaresborough." Tucked inside is a fold-out accordion strip of black-and-white photographic miniatures showing Knaresborough's star attractions: Plumpton Rock, St Robert's Chapel (with a figure posed dramatically at the cave entrance), the High Bridge, Parish Church interior, Castle Rock, and a general town view. Published by the Photochrom Co. Ltd of London and Tunbridge Wells (copyright), postmarked Southborough, Kent, 12 August 1930, and mailed to Miss Joan MacDonald at 106 Fargo Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The message, from Dorothy and Joyce, reads in part: "Mother & William are gonna see if we can make it here until we have been well — we have had cooler [weather]..."
