Postcard Niederwalddenkmal Rhine Germany 1952 Comic Pull-Out Novelty Views

Niederwalddenkmal / Rhine Valley, Germany1952ChromeGood

A rosy-cheeked boy in lederhosen and a jaunty feathered hat sits atop a tree stump in an alpine meadow, clutching a green bottle with a look of bemused satisfaction — and the verse beneath him delivers the punchline in German: "Mit der Flasche in der Hand / wandre ich durch's ganze Land / Willst Du wissen wo ich schwitze / Siehe nach worauf ich sitze" ("With bottle in hand I wander the whole land — want to know where I sweat? Look at what I sit on"), a cheeky nod to the famous Niederwalddenkmal monument near Rüdesheim am Rhein. "Gruß vom Niederwalddenkmal" — Greetings from the Niederwald Monument — captions the front, which unfolds to reveal a charming accordion pull-out of black-and-white miniature views of the Rhine Valley: Schloß Stolzenfels, Braubach, Felsental der Loreley, Oberwesel, Kaub m. Gutenfels u. Pfalz, St. Goarshausen, and more. The reverse, sent to young Carl in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, carries a message from someone who signs off as "Anne-Marie," written in all caps and dated August 7, 1952, with two German Bundespost 10-pfennig posthorn stamps. An irresistible combination of comic novelty, Rhine Valley tourism, and mid-century transatlantic correspondence.
