Postcard 1939 Linen San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge Golden Gate Expo CA

San Francisco, CA, USA1939LinenGood

Six lanes of gleaming Art Deco steel stretch toward a candy-colored San Francisco skyline in this vivid linen-era card — mailed the very summer the Golden Gate International Exposition lit up Treasure Island, just visible in the bay beyond. Publisher Stanley A. Piltz captured the bridge at its bustling best, cars streaming across both decks while ferryboats still dotted the water below. On the back, a writer named Mary dashes off a breathless note to a young woman named Marjorie in Washington, D.C., gushing about Chinatown at night and how the city nearly did her in — a firsthand dispatch from one of America's great pre-war travel seasons. The postmark reads San Francisco, September 2, 1939, just one day after Germany invaded Poland, lending this cheerful holiday card an eerie historical poignancy.
