Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sunlight filters through broad shade trees onto the sturdy Collegiate Gothic stone facade of the Wilson Swimming Pool at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri — a handsome hand-coloured Albertype card that captures the campus's signature grey granite architecture at its most serene, with a low fieldstone retaining wall edging the manicured lawn in the foreground. The Wilson Pool, built in the early 1910s, was a landmark facility for the university and its surrounding community; Washington University's Hilltop Campus, designed in the style of an English collegiate quadrangle after the 1904 World's Fair, drew enormous pride and a brisk souvenir postcard trade in the years that followed. The Albertype Company of Brooklyn was renowned for its fidelity in architectural reproduction, and their hand-colouring process gives this card a warm, painterly glow that photographic cards of the era could not match.
