Spanish moss cascades like silver curtains from ancient live oak limbs in this hauntingly beautiful real-photo-style card from Brookgreen Gardens — one of America's oldest and most atmospheric sculpture gardens, carved from the rice plantation lands of the old South Carolina Low Country. The gnarled canopy arches over a brick wall and formal garden bed, the whole scene rendered in deep, velvety black-and-white that captures the primordial stillness of coastal Carolina. Brookgreen was established in 1931 by Archer Milton Huntington and sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington on the grounds of four former antebellum rice plantations, and quickly became celebrated for its integration of American sculpture with native landscape. This unused card, with its minimal institutional typography and photo-quality image, dates to the garden's early promotional era, circa 1935–1950.
