Postcard 1910 New Year Greetings Embossed Baby New Year Cleveland OH Mailed

Cleveland, Ohio, USA1910Pre-linenGood

A cherubic, rosy-cheeked Baby New Year peeks impishly around a partially open door, clutching a doily-wrapped bouquet of purple violets and a red flower, a wisp of blue smoke curling from a tiny pipe atop his golden curls — one of the most charming and well-executed embossed New Year greeting card designs of the Edwardian era, sent from Cleveland, Ohio in December 1910 to a Miss Adelaide in Cleveland, signed with affection by "Constance." The gilt-highlighted verse reads: "The little New Year is about to appear / I hope he will bring you all joy and good cheer," a sentiment as warm today as when Constance pressed this card into a Cleveland postbox just before Christmas 1910. The embossing is exceptional — the door hardware is rendered in metallic gold relief, the textured border is deeply impressed, and the chromolithographic color of the child figure remains vivid and lively despite 110+ years. The baby's knowing sideways glance and the playful smoking-pipe hat detail make this one of the more characterful Baby New Year designs of the period. Mailed with a 1¢ green Washington stamp, cancelled by the Cleveland machine frank dated December 1910, the card is a fully intact social artifact of Edwardian holiday correspondence. Card series code NY-76 is printed at lower left.
