1906 Grant Cottage Mt McGregor NY Postcard Room Where General Grant Died

Mount McGregor, Saratoga County, New York, USA1906Pre-linenGood

Inside a sun-dappled parlor at Mount McGregor, New York, a draped writing table marks the exact spot where Ulysses S. Grant — Civil War hero and 18th President of the United States — drew his final breath on July 23, 1885, just days after completing his famous Personal Memoirs. This evocative hand-colored real-photo-style postcard, published by Robson & Adee of Saratoga Springs and printed in Germany, was mailed on September 16, 1906, from Saratoga Springs to a young woman named Maggie in Clarksville, Albany County, New York — postmarked at both origin and destination. The wicker furniture, fireplace, chandelier, and heavy Victorian drapes are preserved exactly as they were in Grant's final days, and the postcard serves as both a historical document and a touching piece of early American memorial tourism.
