Antique & Vintage Postcards

Towering date palms rise from ochre earth above a winding irrigation channel thick with watercress in this ravishing hand-tinted view of Marrakech's legendary Palmeraie — the vast palm grove north of the city that has sheltered travellers and caravans for a thousand years. Two figures on donkeys pick their way along the sun-bleached ridge above, the brilliant turquoise sky hand-applied with the confident brushwork characteristic of the Flandrin studio's best colonial-era Moroccan production. Published by Photo Flandrin of Casablanca, whose address at 128 Rue Gay-Lussac placed them among French Morocco's most prolific and artistically accomplished postcard producers of the 1920s, this carte postale carries a pencilled French note on the reverse and a previous collector's "Morocco" annotation — evidence of a well-travelled collecting history. The Palmeraie remains one of Marrakech's most iconic landscapes.
