Antique & Vintage Postcards

Perched above the Vienna Woods, the Kahlenberg hill rises dramatically in this evocative real-photo postcard — the Baroque towers of the Kahlenberg church peek through a canopy of summer oaks, while terraced vineyard slopes tumble toward a sunlit valley below. This is the hilltop from which King John III Sobieski surveyed the Ottoman siege lines before the decisive 1683 Battle of Vienna, and locals have been picnicking on its grassy flanks ever since. Someone — let's call him by the first name suggested on the written card — paused here on a warm May day and scrawled the caption "Kahlenberg bei Wien" in careful German script, a small act of memory-keeping that gives this commercial RPPC its personal warmth. The deckle-edged format and Postkartenverlag "Donauland," Wien III printing date it firmly to the early 1940s.
