Antique & Vintage Postcards

A sweeping rooftop panorama of wartime Vienna opens before you — the octagonal tower of the Minoritenkirche dominates the middle ground while the extravagant neo-Gothic spires of the Rathaus pierce a cloudy sky in the distance, the Wienerwald hills just visible on the horizon. Taken from the "Hochhaus" (high-rise), Vienna's first modern tall building completed in 1932 on Herrengasse, this angle was a fashionable new vantage point that made the medieval and imperial cityscape look almost cinematic. The image captures the city in the early 1940s, still architecturally intact before Allied bombing raids later in the war. Published by Donauland of Vienna's third district, the deckle-edged real-photo card was never mailed and survives in clean, unwritten condition.
