Antique & Vintage Postcards

A gilded imperial harp stands alone in a grand salon at Malmaison, its eagle-crowned column and ornate Empire-style neck instantly recognizable as a treasure belonging to Joséphine herself — Napoleon's beloved first Empress played this very instrument in the château outside Paris that she called home after their divorce. Photographed by the prestigious Neurdein brothers (ND Phot), this early real-photo-style halftone captures every carved detail of the soundboard, the clawed feet of the base, and the densely strung strings that once filled the rooms with music. Malmaison, purchased by Joséphine in 1799, became her refuge and passion project; she filled it with art, exotic plants, and objects like this harp that reflected the opulence of the First Empire. Card number 70 in the Château de la Malmaison series, this undivided-back-era card predates 1905, making it one of the earliest souvenir issues from what is now a national museum. Unused and crisp, it appeals equally to harp enthusiasts, Napoleonica collectors, and lovers of French château history.
