Issued by publisher G. Bouchetal of the Boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris, this early card reproduces a celebrated double portrait object held at the Musée Carnavalet, Paris's great museum of city history, catalogued here as number 40 in the Bonaparte/Joséphine series. The soft engraving-style reproduction — showing Napoléon in his general's coat and Joséphine in a high-waisted Empire gown with her signature ringlet curls — has a tender, almost cameo-like quality that made such images perennially popular with collectors. The undivided-style back (no correspondence/address split) and Bouchetal imprint date this to the very early 1900s.
