Postcard 1900s Musée du Louvre David Coronation Napoleon Josephine France

Paris, France1902Pre-linenGood

A hand-colored collotype postcard glows with imperial pageantry — Jacques-Louis David's monumental Sacre de Napoléon captured in a detail that places Napoleon mid-gesture, crown raised over the kneeling Joséphine, as bishops, courtiers, and Pope Pius VII bear solemn witness in Notre-Dame. Published by the Neurdein Frères (ND Phot.) as part of their celebrated Musée du Louvre series, this card reproduces one of the most politically charged paintings of the 19th century: David (1748–1825) famously altered the canvas at Napoleon's request to depict the Emperor crowning his empress rather than himself, erasing the Pope's passive role. The card is unused and unposted, its back bearing only the simple undivided-style "Carte Postale" heading, which places production squarely in the pre-1904 era of French postal regulations.
