Antique & Vintage Postcards

Step inside Napoleon's private world — this crisp 1925 postcard captures the Cabinet de travail (study room) of Napoleon I at the Palais de Fontainebleau, its Empire-style desk commanding the center of the frame, flanked by green-shaded lamps, gilt armchairs, and candelabras, while heavy draped curtains frame a tall window and an ornate fireplace glows at left. Fontainebleau was one of Napoleon's most beloved residences — it was here in 1814 that he bade his famous tearful farewell to his Old Guard before his first abdication, kissing the eagle standard in the courtyard below. The card was printed by L. Ménard of Fontainebleau and carries a clear 1925 circular printer's stamp on the reverse. The bilingual caption — "Cabinet de travail de Napoléon Ier / The Study-room of Napoleon I" — signals this was produced for an international tourist audience visiting the château in the interwar years.
