Antique & Vintage Postcards

Five figures frozen in a pivotal moment of European diplomacy — Napoleon stands at center-left in his white breeches and black uniform coat, hat in hand, as the elegantly crowned Queen of Prussia is presented to him at Tilsit in 1807, Tsar Alexander I towering behind her in this arresting engraving reproduced from a painting in the Musée de Versailles. The meeting at Tilsit was among the most charged encounters of the Napoleonic era: the defeated Prussian queen Louise personally appealed to Napoleon for more favorable peace terms, and though Napoleon was reportedly charmed, he yielded little. The card was published by Mme Moreau of Versailles and carries the undivided-style back format with the notation "Ce côté est exclusivement réservé à l'adresse," characteristic of very early French carte postale production circa 1900–1903.
