Postcard 1900s Napoleon Marie-Louise Wedding Painting Rouget Versailles Museum

Versailles, France1907Pre-linenGood

In a swirl of imperial silk, ermine, and ecclesiastical gold, Napoleon stands facing Marie-Louise at the altar on April 2, 1810 — their religious wedding ceremony captured in Georges Rouget's monumental painting and here reproduced on a sepia-toned carte postale from the Musée de Versailles. The bridesmaids crowd to the left in their Empireline gowns, bishops and clergy fill the right, and the two principals exchange rings at center — a dynastic union Napoleon engineered to secure an heir and cement his place among Europe's royal houses after divorcing Joséphine. Published by the prestigious Lévy et Neurdein Réunis house of Paris (the "LL" series), this card dates to approximately 1905–1910 and features the early divided back with the instruction "N'écrire que sur le côté réservé à la correspondance."
