Antique & Vintage Postcards

A hushed room in the Hôtel des Invalides holds some of the most intimate relics of the Napoleonic legend — the death mask cast of the Emperor's face, the Cenotaph of Cherbourg, and the golden crown, all displayed under glass in the Chapelle Napoléon, photographed here in crisp halftone detail that reveals the ornate brass rail barriers and diamond-pane windows of this solemn sanctuary. The card's caption enumerates the objects: "Le moulage de la tête de l'Empereur Napoléon, Cénotaphe de Cherbourg, la Couronne d'or; dans le fond, le poêle funéraire" — the funeral pall visible in the background completing the funerary ensemble. Stamped boldly in red on the face with the circular seal of the Société de Secours aux Blessés Militaires (French Red Cross predecessor, "Inter Arma Caritas"), the card was almost certainly sold or distributed through a WWI-era military charity network, and its Musée de l'Armée back seal underscores the institutional provenance.
