Antique & Vintage Postcards

The room is silent now, but its furniture holds the memory of an empire's collapse — this crisp black-and-white postcard shows the Cabinet de l'Abdication at the Palais de Fontainebleau, the intimate study where Napoleon signed his first abdication on April 6, 1814, surrendering power to the allied coalition and setting his course for exile on Elba. The Empire-style chairs, the central guéridon table, the ornate commodes and crystal chandelier are rendered in fine photographic detail, the velvet ropes still keeping visitors at a respectful distance. Published as card no. 265 in a Fontainebleau palace series, the divided back carries the standard French "Carte Postale / Correspondance / Adresse" format and a note that foreign countries may not accept correspondence on the address side — typical of French postal era cards ca. 1904–1915.
