Antique & Vintage Postcards

Nestled improbably deep in a fold of the Pyrenees, the spa village of Eaux-Bonnes — famous since the 16th century for its sulfurous thermal waters — glitters in tinted photographic color against the vast green-and-granite backdrop of the Pic du Gers (2,612 m), its grand hotels and casino hugging the narrow valley floor like a jewel in a mountain setting. This divided-back card, published by Établissements Ch. Collas & Cie of Cognac, was posted from Pau on December 4, 1930, with a 15-centime red French "Pasteur" definitive stamp, and addressed to a Ruth in Fayetteville, New York, U.S.A. The machine-cancel slogan alongside reads Passez l'hiver à Pau — Climat Idéal — Tous les Sports ("Spend the winter in Pau — Ideal Climate — All Sports"), a promotional tourism message that captures the Belle Époque leisure culture of the French southwest. The message, written in a flowing French hand, appears to reference holiday greetings and a journey through the mountain towns.
