Postcard WWI 1914-16 Loos Pas-de-Calais Coal Mine Tower Bridge La Grande Guerre

Loos-en-Gohelle, Pas-de-Calais, France1916Pre-linenGood

Rising like a skeletal iron giant from the scarred landscape of Loos-en-Gohelle in the Pas-de-Calais, this striking industrial postcard shows the famous "Tower Bridge" — the twin-headframe winding towers of the Lens coalfields — during the cataclysm of the First World War. The card is number 44 in the "La Grande Guerre 1914-15-16" series published by A. Richard of Paris, and the structure photographed became one of the most iconic landmarks of the Battle of Loos (September 1915), used as an observation post by both sides and still standing today as a listed monument. The sheer scale of the latticed steel framework looms over a modest brick engine house, conveying the industrial might that made this region strategically vital and bitterly contested. Published under the "Visé Paris 44 / A.R." censor approval stamp, the card circulated during wartime with official sanction — a vivid piece of the Western Front's industrial memory.
