Postcard 1900s Dubrovnik Ragusa Croatia St Blasius Church Square Austro-Hungarian

Dubrovnik (Ragusa), Croatia1905Pre-linenGood

Standing proud in the limestone-paved heart of old Ragusa, the exuberant Baroque façade of Crkva sv. Vlaha — the Church of St. Blasius, patron saint of Dubrovnik — fills this early Austro-Hungarian era real-photo style card with architectural grandeur: Corinthian columns, lavish sculptural ornament, and the city's protective statue of the saint surveying the square below. Two gentlemen in dark suits pause before it as if in contemplation, while the dome of the cathedral peeks over a neighboring rooftop in the background. This card was published by the Weiss imprint of Ragusa (Dubrovnik's Italian/German name under Habsburg and later Yugoslav administration) and carries a detailed handwritten note on the reverse providing historical annotations about the Roland Column visible in the square — identified as a "Hungarian Guarantee, place for town crier's announcements, support for city statute — forearm carved as measure, prob. date 1418" — and noting that "Roland won each victory over Saracen Corsairs & killed their Chevalier Chevauto in the bay." A remarkable piece of travel scholarship in miniature.
