Antique & Vintage Postcards

A monumental Baroque altar fills the frame of this atmospheric interior view from the Dominican Church in Dubrovnik (Ragusa), anchored by a large altarpiece painting attributed — as noted in pencil on the reverse by a careful traveler — to Titian himself. The composition shows a central female saint in white, flanked by a bishop and an angel, with a kneeling donor figure below; candlesticks and floral arrangements flank the ornate marble altar table. Whether or not the attribution stands, the painting is the celebrated polyptych by Titian now generally confirmed as authentic, making this card a document of early 20th-century art tourism along the Dalmatian coast. A detail crop (_02) allows close examination of the painted figures. The trilingual back and code 1803–1908 date production to 1908.
