Postcard 1909 Split Spalato Cathedral Peristyle Roman Columns Croatia

Split, Croatia1909Pre-linenGood

Towering Corinthian columns of Diocletian's Palace rise dramatically against the ancient stone facade of Split's Cathedral (Stolna Crkva) in this striking real-photo-style black-and-white view published by Stengel & Co. of Dresden — one of the premier postcard publishers of the Edwardian era. The peripteron (peristyle colonnade) of the former Roman mausoleum, converted to a Christian cathedral in the 7th century, is shown in intimate close-up, the worn limestone steps and scattered architectural fragments evoking nearly two millennia of continuous habitation. This unused card, numbered 40430 in the Stengel catalog and printed in 1909, represents a high point of early architectural photography along the Dalmatian coast.
