Postcard 1914 Colborne Street Brantford Ontario Canada Sunday Street Scene

Brantford, Ontario, Canada1914Pre-linenFair-Good

On a quiet Canadian Sunday in March 1914, a hand-tinted view of Colborne Street captures Brantford, Ontario at a moment of civic pride — telegraph poles march down the unpaved thoroughfare, shop awnings line both sides, and a horse-drawn carriage idles mid-street while pedestrians in dark overcoats drift along the boardwalks. The sender, writing to someone she affectionately calls "Brer," explains with dry wit that this is "one of the principal business streets of this city" — yet "no business of any kind is done here, not even street cars run on Sunday." She signs off with love to the family and a warm thank-you for kindness shown to a woman named Helen, painting a vivid picture of small-town Ontario life just months before the world changed forever.
