Postcard 1923 Beethoven Geburtshaus Bonn Germany Occupation Army France

Bonn, Germany1923Pre-linenFair-Good

Sent from occupied Bonn in January 1923 — the very month France and Belgium moved troops into the Ruhr — this evocative sepia postcard pairs a atmospheric sketch of Ludwig van Beethoven's birthplace on the Bonngasse with a brooding inset portrait of the composer bent over his manuscript, pencil in hand. The birthplace is rendered in fine halftone from an engraving: a modest three-story stucco-and-timber townhouse with shuttered windows, a picket fence, and bare winter branches framing the courtyard — the same building that had opened as a museum in 1889. The portrait, likely adapted from the celebrated 1820 oil by Joseph Karl Stieler, shows Beethoven with his characteristically wild hair and intense gaze. On the reverse, written in French cursive across every available centimeter, a sender identified only as writing from the French Army of Occupation (Sect. 3, Trésors et Postes) addresses a violin professor named A. Ruff in Privas, Ardèche — a rare and historically charged combination of subject and context, the great German composer's shrine reached by French occupying forces.
