Postcard 1912 Hamburg Bieberhaus Bieber Café London Taverne Germany Used

Hamburg, Germany1912Pre-linenGood

The commanding curved corner bulk of the Bieberhaus fills this sepia-toned Edwardian-era postcard of Hamburg's bustling inner city — a six-story commercial colossus whose ground-floor arcade teemed with the Bieber-Café, London Taverne, and Ostertag-Werke, while its upper floors housed enterprises ranging from a detective bureau (Detektiv-Büro Auskunftei) to a one-year preparatory institute (Einjähr. Institut). Built around 1910 near the Alster canals, the Bieberhaus was a quintessential example of Wilhelmine-era commercial architecture: broad pilastered bays, generous plate-glass shopfronts with striped awnings, and the proprietor Hugo Fleischer's name emblazoned in the caption. A penciled German message scrawled diagonally across the image side asks cheerfully whether the recipient will also be coming to Germany ("Kommst Du auch nach Deutschland?"), lending the card an intimate, spontaneous energy. Mailed from Hamburg on 27 April 1912 to "Herr Loder" in Barton, Washington County, Wisconsin, USA — a transatlantic message bridging Old World and New.
