Postcard 1910s Königstein Sächsische Schweiz Germany Elbe River Pre-Linen

Königstein, Saxony, Germany1910Pre-linenGood

Perched dramatically above the winding Elbe River, the hilltop fortress of Königstein looms over a terracotta-roofed town in this richly colored pre-linen view from Saxony's "Saxon Switzerland" region — a card that traveled from a summer wanderer to a Berliner named Willi at a Sprengelstraße address. The panoramic composition captures the town's distinctive church with its Baroque tower, the railway line hugging the riverbank, and paddle steamers dotting the water below the great sandstone mesa that housed one of Germany's most storied fortresses. The sender has marked their hotel or lodging with a hand-drawn "X" at the top left — a charming personal touch common to Edwardian-era travel cards. Königstein Fortress, never taken by force in its entire military history, dominates the skyline just as it did for Augustus the Strong, who used it as both treasury and prison. The card's vibrant chromolithographic coloring and crisp topographic detail make it a standout example of early German tourist publishing.
