Postcard 1905 München Karlstor Gate Richard Wagner Artist Signed Pre-Linen

Munich, Bavaria, Germany1905Pre-linenGood

Sunlight floods through the twin Gothic arches of Munich's medieval Karlstor gate in this luminous artist-rendered chromolithograph where Edwardian strollers in summer dresses and boater hats share the cobblestones with a yellow horse-drawn stage coach — a scene of the Bavarian capital at its most romantically prosperous, bearing the printed name of artist Richard Wagner in the lower right corner. The Karlstor, one of only three surviving gates of Munich's 14th-century city wall, frames a deep vista down Neuhaupstraße toward the towers of the Frauenkirche, while an early electric tram waits at right and advertising posters plaster the ancient stonework. The warm impressionistic palette — ochre stone, cobalt sky, rose-pink ladies' dresses — typifies the best of Edwardian German postcard illustration. A clock tower rises at upper left. The card was produced with a fine halftone dot screen printed over a painted original, giving it an almost textile quality when examined closely.
