Sunlight floods through the twin Gothic arches of Munich's medieval Karlstor gate in this luminous artist-rendered chromolithograph where Edwardian strollers in summer dresses and boater hats share the cobblestones with a yellow horse-drawn stage coach — a scene of the Bavarian capital at its most romantically prosperous, bearing the printed name of artist Richard Wagner in the lower right corner. The Karlstor, one of only three surviving gates of Munich's 14th-century city wall, frames a deep vista down Neuhaupstraße toward the towers of the Frauenkirche, while an early electric tram waits at right and advertising posters plaster the ancient stonework.
