Antique & Vintage Postcards

Artist Charles E. Flower captures the medieval marketplace of Hildesheim in luminous ochres and reds for Raphael Tuck & Sons' celebrated "Oilette" series — the round-turreted corner building (the famous Knochenhaueramtshaus precinct) in the left foreground draws the eye toward the stepped-gable Rathaus behind, chestnut trees in full autumn gold filtering afternoon light over townspeople in Wilhelmine dress going about their Saturday market. Published in the "Weite-Weite-Welt" series No. 632B for a German-language audience, this unused Tuck Oilette is a handsome example of Edwardian chromolithographic artistry applied to a German architectural subject. A dealer's pencil notation on the reverse reads um 1910/20 and catalog reference BPJ 490.
