Postcard 1919 Düsseldorf Corneliusplatz Tram Street Scene WWI Era France

Düsseldorf, Germany1919Pre-linenGood

Electric trams glide across the sunlit cobblestones of Düsseldorf's Corneliusplatz in this vivid color-printed postcard from the immediate post-WWI period — the ornate Cornelius department store anchors the center of the composition, its twin onion domes competing with a Gothic church spire on the horizon, while crowds of pedestrians animate the foreground in the manner of a prosperous Wilhelmine city still catching its breath after four years of war. The reverse, dated 3 January 1919 by the sender and written in French to "Chers Parents" (Dear Parents), describes the end of a tour of duty and the hope of soon returning home — a soldier's postcard, mailed from Eltville am Rhein via publisher Karl Fischer's imprint, No. 603, with a message that mentions a comrade named "Coquard" about to go on leave and anticipates a 30-day furlough. A warm, humanizing document of the Allied occupation era.
