Antique & Vintage Postcards

Shimmering with the gold and crimson of one of the world's most storied opera houses, this chrome-era color postcard captures the interior of Milan's Teatro alla Scala during a full ballet performance — white-tutued dancers arrayed across the green stage, a sold-out house of thousands packed into the horseshoe tiers above, and the great crystal chandelier blazing overhead in a composition of almost cinematic grandeur. Mailed in 1968 from Venice, the card carries a warm note from Rose to her grandparents in Akron, Ohio: she reports being "keep very busy the last few weeks" but calls it "a very rewarding experience," and eagerly anticipates meeting a niece in Rome around May 28 to June 6. The card bears two Italian stamps including a L.50 Europa 1968 CEPT key design issue — a collectible in its own right — canceled at Venice. This card beautifully bridges high culture, family love, and the golden age of American student travel in Italy.
