Postcard 1926 Venice Porta della Carta Doge's Palace Italy Oilette Style

Venice, Italy1926Pre-linenFair-Good

Richly saturated in amber, crimson, and sage, this stunning Edwardian-era artistic postcard captures the Porta della Carta — the magnificent Gothic gateway to the Doge's Palace in Venice — in a painterly style that makes the carved stone tracery, winged lion of St. Mark, and flanking saints practically glow. Two elegant Venetian women stroll in foreground, one carrying a vivid red parasol that pops against the pale stone archway, lending the scene an intimate, almost impressionistic warmth. Sent from Venice on December 17, 1926, bearing an Italian 75-centesimi stamp and a bold "SOTTO[SCRIVETE] AL PRESTITO" (Subscribe to the Loan) propaganda slogan cancel — a Fascist-era Italian government bond promotion — this card carries quiet historical resonance beyond its beauty. "Izzie" wrote simply: "Best Wishes for a Happy New Year, kind regards, Izzie" — addressed to a Mr. J. Long, care of H.C. Beckman at 310 W. Roosevelt Boulevard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Publisher Alterocchi Milano is identified at lower left; card number 4338-7 is noted.
